Olympic Gold Medalist Nikki Stone has written a book promoting her unique philosophy of success, a philosophy which she calls “The Turtle Effect”. Nikki explains: “The Turtle Effect was taught to me by my mother when I was a young girl. She told me that I could achieve anything I wanted to as long as I remembered to have a soft inside, a hard shell, and be sure to stick my neck out.” [1] Nikki’s book is entitled Why Turtles Fly and is due out in January 2010. Nikki Stone knows all about flying. She has the distinction of being the first American ever to win an Olympic Gold Medal in the sport of Inverted Aerial Skiing [3], in which the skier races down a snow-covered slope toward a 12-foot snow ramp. The ramp launches the skier five stories into the air, where she does a series of twists, turns, and flips before landing (hopefully feet-first!) on the slope below.

Nikki’s Gold Medal came during the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan. Less than two years prior, she had suffered a debilitating injury involving damage to two spinal discs. She was left unable to stand, and ten different doctors told her that she might never be able to ski again [3]. But ski she did! All the way to Gold.

Nikki Stone is an amazing athlete, and an even more amazing person. In November 2001, Nikki brought her Olympic Gold Medal to Waxahachie, Texas, to our house on Cumberland Road, to see my precious Ashley less than a week before Ashley died. Ashley beamed as Nikki showed her a video of the 1998 Gold Medal jump. Nikki and Ashley traded ski stories and autographed pictures. Nikki also presented Ashley with the very first Olympic Torch for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Neal White, editor for our local newspaper, the Waxahachie Daily Light, captured all the magic of Nikki’s visit in a newspaper article entitled “A real hero“.
