My friend Horace Bratcher told me a funny story from his childhood that I thought you might get a chuckle out of as well.

One Sunday morning, Horace walked into his father’s bedroom while he was getting dressed for church. “Daddy,” little Horace said, “I’ve got to have a memory verse for Sunday School.”

His father thought for a minute, and then said, “He that sitteth upon a hot rock shall surely rise.”

That morning in Sunday School, Horace proudly quoted his newly-memorized verse of Scripture. When he had finished, the teacher asked, “Horace, where did you get that?” “My father told me,” Horace replied.

Later that evening, at home, Horace told his father that the Sunday School teacher didn’t much appreciate that Scripture that he had given him. His father, somewhat surprised and embarrassed, responded, “Horace, surely you didn’t tell her that! I thought you were smarter than that.”

So, the moral of this story is two-fold. If you’re the Dad, be careful what you tell your children. If you’re the little boy, always check your references!
