[PART 3 OF 12]
Solomon begins the book of Ecclesiastes by introducing himself to us.
“The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:” (Ecclesiastes 1:1)
The Teacher
Reading the writings of Solomon is like climbing a sacred mountain to inquire of the holy man at the top concerning the meaning of life. Solomon is the wise man, he is the “guru”, he is the one who has been entrusted with the answers we seek. He is the Teacher.
As we have seen previously, the legendary wisdom of Solomon was a gift from God. His wisdom was so deep and so profound that people came from all over the world to listen to him. He really was the wise man at the top of the mountain, the Great Teacher of his time.
Interestingly, we are told in Scripture of some of the specific subjects upon which Solomon was considered a scholar.
“He described plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also taught about animals and birds, reptiles and fish.” (1 Kings 4:33)
Son of David
My Dad was, is, and always will be, my hero. If I can become half the man he was, if I can touch half the lives he touched, if I can be even half as spiritual as he was … I will consider my life to have been wildly successful. I am proud to be the son of Larry O’Rear.King David was called “a man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22). That label was given to David by God Himself! I’m thinking that would make for a pretty good reference on a résumé.
Solomon is proud to be the son of David. Even though David was not perfect, even though he committed adultery and murder, even though his family fell apart in his later years, David was still one of the greatest and most beloved kings of the nation of Israel. He was still a man after God’s own heart. He was still the man who Solomon affectionately remembered as “Dad”.
King in Jerusalem
Talk about being successful! This guy is at the top of his game. Solomon had become the most powerful man in the nation of Israel. He was the undisputed leader of God’s chosen people, the Israelites.
Surely this great man of God, full of knowledge and wisdom, respected and admired by the rulers of the world, will reveal some deep profundity that has the power to transform my life. I can hardly wait!
